Why I gave up caffiene for the NSPCC

Today is pancake day or, as its more formally known as, Shrove Tuesday. Leap Anywhere and the Kindness Offensive were at Ed's Diner in Rupert Street giving away free pancakes all in the name of Kick Bullying and the NSPCC.

I sat up at the counter and was offered a choice of tea or coffee as I waited for the next batch of pancakes to be ready. The place was packed, chaotic but in a warm pancakey, helium balloons and ribbons kind of way. They even had a couple in full 50s regalia jiving along to the music pouring out of the speakers.

What I didn't realize us that my maple syruped pancake had a price. Now shrove Tuesday is the last day of freedom before lent. People eat up all the food that can't be eaten during the 30 days of lent.

In keeping with that tradition, Malcolm Scovil of Leap Anyway mixed with the crowd of people lured by free food, camera in hand. His mission? To make us give up something for 30 days in support of the NSPCC.

So, being the daring person I am, promised on camera that I would give up caffeine for a month. That means no coffee, no diet coke, no builders tea and, as someone who knew I'd be in the US pointed out, no mountain dew. Over the upcoming 30 days I'll then talk about my caffeine withdrawal all so I can mention NSPCC and hopefully get more people interested in this amazing charity.

This would be a mean feat if I was just sitting at home for the month BUT I'm not going to be. I'm going to be travelling with the #tuttle2texas crew, filming in 6 different cities over 10 days before filming for a week at SXSW in Austin. Yikes!

So this is the last drop of caffiene I'll have in 30 days. I promise I won't whinge too much. I do want to still have friends at the end if this. I have made Malcolm promise to get me the biggest coffee I've ever seen upon my return. And I'll be holding him to it.

Follow the NSPCC on twitter at @theNSPCC or see more on their website www.nspcc.org.uk . Are you up for the challenge? Join me and give up something for 30 days for the NSPCC.

Addicted to TV: A list of all TV series watched in the past 45 days

Inspired by <a
href="http://listography.com/mlind/television/watched_in_2010"
target=_blank>Mara's list of all the episodes of TV watched in 2010</a>, I
thought I'd list the programs I've watched (but not every single episode!
I'd be here for ever!) I have a feeling as I write this that I will
realize just how much TV I watch, alot of which may be bad.  But bad TV
can still be good.  Right?  Right?

And so the list begins in no particular order:

Cold Case
Big Love
American Dad
Family Guy
Eastwick
Models of the Runway
Archer
Project Runway
Hustle
30 Rock
Burn Notice
Community
Come Dine with Me
Greys Anatomy
Leverage
Past Life
Extreme Makeover Home Edition
Private Practice
The Mentalist
The White Room
Criminal Minds
CSI New York
Gary Unmarried
Mercy
Psych
The New Adventures of Old Christine
Ugly Betty
Chelsea Lately
The Good Wife
White Collar
Accidently on Purpose
Chuck
Greek
House
How I Met Your Mother
Heroes
One Tree Hill
The Big Bang Theory
Two and a Half Men
Bill Baileys Birdwatching Bonanza
Ghost Hunters International
Ghost Whisperer
Medium
Numb3rs
Qi
Fringe
Celebrity Ghost Stories
CSI
Material Girl
Private Practise
Bones
Desperate Housewives
Lark Rise to Candleford
Dollhouse
Better off Ted
Paranormal Cops
Scrubs
American Paranormal
Law and Order

Wow.  That's...that's so much TV. I mean I love TV so I understand why
there's so many programs but they were all watched in the last 45 days.
And I actually know that I missed some. But at the end of the day, I grew
up with TV. It was my campanion before I could even talk. Actually, my
first sentance was me asking my Maria wasn't on Seasame street that day.
Yep.  Full sentance.  I actually may write some of my TV memories.  There
are a lot of them...

So any shows on there your favorite?  Any I missed?

The countdown has truely begun

Today my flights were finally booked and it sunk in that we are leaving 3 weeks from tomorrow to Boston. And there's so much to do.  We still don't have funding in place but with tickets booked, I'm going on a wing and a prayer as is the rest of us.  I trust that we can make this work and regardless of what is or isn't in place, I know that we will discuss culture across borders and countries unlike any I've had before.  I also finally get to go to many of the cities that I've always wanted to see but never have had the chance to.  For Michelle, who's coming along to film and take part, she's never been to the states other than a quick trip across the border into Idaho from Canada. It will be facinating to see these new places through her eyes.

I've also come to the realization that we will be travelling in March and though there is (usually) no snow in England at this time, there will probably be plenty along the East Coast.  I so hope it isn't too cold.  Today the weather is as follows:

Boston 1 C | -7 C
Washington 1 C | -7 C
New York 3°C | -7°C
Atlanta 11°C | 3°C
New Orleans 13°C | 1°C
Austin 8°C | 0°C

I know I know.  I'm Canadian.  This snow should be nothing to me. And some of those temperatures snow can't touch.  But as I've acclimatized to British language, culture and customs, so have I acclimatized to the weather. So I must remember to pack extra socks amongst the camara equipment and hope to stay in places with good heating.

Does this remind you of...

Sometimes when I walk by a shop window or down a street, something will catch my eye. This morning I passed this and thought "hmmm. That mannequin is stretching. How interesting." Of course that then reminded me of the 1987 blockbuster Mannequin starring brat packer Andrew McCarthy and Kim Cattrell when she was only famous for cult Canadian classic Porky's. A magical mannequin comes to life but only for Andrew (otherwise she's frozen in sometimes awkward positions like the stretched out mannequin I saw). He then does everything in his power to save her from evil people and saws and stuff as he loves her like no one ever before. Doll fetish anyone? I now have Starship in my head... "and we can build this dream together, standing strong forever, nothing's gonna stop us now..."
